Innovation in mental health services: what are the key components of success?

As many would recognise, change is the only constant in healthcare. However, not every change is successfully implemented or sustained. This is despite significant amount of resources being committed to achieve the change. In this research, the authors report on contextual influences which act as enablers or barriers in the acceptance and integration of innovations in mental health within the National Health Service and community settings. This research involved a large number of stakeholders and utilised a range of data collection strategies. Based on the findings from this research, the authors developed a model of innovation implementation with three key components namely, context, process and outcomes. The findings from this research will be relevant for any healthcare stakeholder who is interested in implementing innovation and achieving (and sustaining) change in healthcare settings.

Interventions encouraging the use of systematic reviews by health policymakers and managers: A systematic review.

This article looks at the impact that systematic reviews have in decision making by health policymakers or managers. They systematically reviewed 4 studies, 3 of which used follow up surveys to assess public health officials systematic review use, and one randomised trial involving tailored messages and systematic reviews. The authors conclude that the level of evidence is weak for the effectiveness of interventions encouraging health policy makers.
